One of the positive effects of travelling with a geographer is that I am always being asked questions about the relevance of space for my research. So after ample discussions, we have started to investigate the linguistic landscape of Majuro. A few years ago, according to Robert Early, you would not see any Marshallese on the road, only English.
Luckily, this situation has changed for the better, but only slightly.
We would like to see whether we can model the occurrence of these (admittedly still relatively rare) tokens of Marshallese used across space. To date, we have taken about 1000 photos of shop signs, advertisement, official signs, graffitti etc. And while our cartographical and statistical results will take a while to materialise, I thought I'd share a few pics of the people we have come across when taking these pics.
