This week-end Seraphim and I had originally planned to go to Eneko, a little island in our atoll. But due to the bad weather we decided to stay at home and work our way through the 2000+ photos we have taken of signs across Majuro. Going though them I realized that they give a beautiful snapshot of the people and living conditions here so I am posting a few that have struck me as significant / beautiful / funny in some way.
Only yesterday I realized how topical our work is: I had a meeting with Alfred Capelle, head of the Customary Law and Language Commission and he told me that the Marshall Islands are in the process of introducing legislation that would require all signs to be bilingual. In fact, they are right now discussing what would need to be done for such a bill to be passed.
What a great idea for a real-time study: we did it now - and we'll come back in two years' time to do it again. I'm game :)
